It simply means you’re human.

As an outdated survival mechanism, the human brain is wired to resist risky situations where the outcome is not known. But as a growth-oriented person trying to create something new and amazing, you deal with a ton of uncertainty as you navigate the uncharted waters of building your bold vision.

There is nothing I can write that will eliminate the causes of entrepreneurial stress. The lack of predictability and stability simply come with the territory.

I can, however, give you three simple, yet powerful cures for stress and overwhelm that will allow you to move forward with more courage, clarity, and consistency so that you can get more done while actually enjoying the process at a deeper level.

Number One: Stay in Your Lane

There’s a reason good ol’ Teddy Roosevelt was quoted as saying:

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

And this is especially true in the face-paced and high-achieving world of entrepreneurship.

Yes, it’s useful to strategically look to others to see what tactics and strategies are working. But this comparison game can quickly turn into an overflow of stress and overwhelm when you are constantly trying to see where you measure up to everyone else in your industry—especially when most people only present their highlights to the world.

Instead, simply stay in your lane.

Get crystal clear on your values and what success really means to you and your organization, and then relentlessly pursue that each and every day. If achieving your version of fulfilling success is truly at the core of your mission, then consistently move toward that vision regardless of what others are doing or posting about.

Number Two: Actively Choose Optimism

Everyone is familiar with the Einstein quote:

“There are only two ways to live your life. One as if nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

This one gets thrown around so often that it loses some of its life-changing profundity. When you stop for a second and actually let it marinade in that beautiful brain of yours, you’ll see how powerfully simple and impactful it really is.

Perspective is your choice.

That’s why two people can look at the exact same painting and have two totally different interpretations.

Every single day, you get to choose how you are going to interpret the events that take place. The choice doesn’t change what will happen, but it drastically changes how you respond to it and how it affects you.

Simply start choosing the perspective that makes you feel better.

This isn’t saying that you’ll live in denial and pretend that your journey is all sunshine and rainbows, but making the positive choice gives you the ability to react to your life in an empowered way.

Number Three: Certainty Is a Myth

Every day we struggle and stress about controlling details and outcomes, trying our hardest to get everything to work out in accordance with our plan.

Yet at the very same time, we are living on a rock, flying through space, orbiting around a ball of radioactive fire that is prone to surface explosions so powerfully violent that they are the equivalent of a million hydrogen bombs going off.

In our world, there is no such thing as certainty.

Whether it’s in technology, in the economy, or in the weather, we can potentially be minutes away from the next cataclysmic shift that will change life as we know it.

So in the grand scheme of things, is it really worth sacrificing your happiness and mental well-being obsessing over every little outcome?

Wouldn’t it be easier to simply focus on doing your best every day, enjoying the process of growth, and being grateful that you have the freedom to do work that is a representation of your strengths and passions?

Remember, perspective is a choice.

Choose not to lose sight of the big picture.
